After the presentation of the retrospective The Colonial Question in the context of Doclisboa, this cycle will now have another moment, with screenings in France, in collaboration with Shellac Films and as part of the Saison France-Portugal 2022 programme.
From the 27th to the 30th of October, a selection of films will be screened, spanning the colonial past of France and Portugal. The curator of the retrospective Amarante Abramovici will accompany the sessions, which will take place at Cinéma Saint-André des Arts (Paris), Le Gyptis (Marseille) and La Baleine (Marseille). The directors Filipa César, Raphaël Grisey and Franssou Prenant will take part in talks after the screenings.
Between contemporary reflections of that time and current questions, the programme takes as its starting point the end of the Algerian War – symbolising the end of the French colonies, skilfully kept under the neo-colonial yoke – which is coincident with the decision by the Portuguese dictatorship to rush into the colonial war, and travels to the birth of the new African cinema.
Carnaval da Vitória, directed by the renowned Angolan filmmaker António Ole, will be one of the exhibited films, and is part of the FILMar preservation project, carried out by the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, with the support of the Financial Mechanism EEA Grants 2020-2024.

About Saison France-Portugal 2022
Agreed between Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, and the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron in 2018, and taking place simultaneously in both countries between 12 February and 31 October 2022, this Crossed Saison will be an opportunity to highlight the closeness and friendship that unite our two countries, represented in particular by the presence in France of a very large Luso-descendant community, and in Portugal of a growing number of French citizens, two dynamic, itinerant and active communities, which constitute an exceptional human and cultural link between our two countries.
In addition to a programme that highlights the Europe of Culture, the Saison France-Portugal 2022 also wishes to make a concrete commitment to the themes that unite us and that our two countries defend in the Europe of the 21st century: ecological and solidarity-based transition, namely through the theme of the Ocean, responsible and sustainable economy, investment in renewable energies, equality between women and men, respect for difference and the values of inclusion.
Through more than 200 events, and with a view to broadening the bases of our cooperation, the Saison France-Portugal 2022 aims to highlight the numerous collaborations between artists, researchers, intellectuals, students and entrepreneurs, between our cities and regions, between our cultural institutions, our universities, our schools and our associations: initiatives that deeply and sustainably link our territories and contribute to the construction of Europe.
